1.1 Background of the Study
Traditional marriage practices in Nigeria are rich in cultural heritage and hold significant social, cultural, and religious value. In Ganye Local Government Area (LGA), Adamawa State, these practices form the backbone of community life, where families and communities come together to celebrate unions that are steeped in tradition. However, with the rapid spread of modernity and changing social norms, there has been a gradual decline in the practice and appreciation of traditional marriage ceremonies, particularly among the younger generation. Photography can play a vital role in preserving and promoting traditional marriage practices by capturing the beauty, rituals, and significance of these ceremonies. Through powerful imagery, photography can help sustain the cultural importance of traditional marriage in Ganye LGA, fostering appreciation and participation among younger people. This study explores how photography can be utilized to promote and preserve the traditional marriage practices of the Ganye people.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite their cultural significance, traditional marriage practices in Ganye LGA are at risk of being overshadowed by modern influences and changing attitudes toward marriage. The younger generation, in particular, is becoming increasingly detached from these practices, which are often perceived as outdated or inconvenient. Photography offers a unique opportunity to document and celebrate traditional marriage ceremonies, helping to promote the importance of these customs. However, the potential of photography in preserving and promoting these cultural practices has yet to be fully explored. This study aims to investigate how photography can contribute to the promotion and continued relevance of traditional marriage practices in Ganye LGA.
